“No, Emily.”

In both cases the parent wants one thing and the child wants something else. The child is being asked to do what he does not want to do. More basically, he or she is being asked to accept a loss—not getting his or her way. A loss means accepting bad feelings and this is a signal for action to the ever-present baby self lurking just below the surface, the self that wants only fun, no stress.
